Atlantic Cities with Historic Centres to meet in Porto to discuss joint challenges
On Wednesday, 22 May, Porto will host the 3rd International Meeting of "Historic Centres under Change – perspectives of World Heritage in the Atlantic Area”.

The meeting, to be held in the auditorium of the Episcopal Palace from 14:30 onwards, forms part of the project "AtlaS.WH - Heritage in the Atlantic Area. Sustainability of Urban World Heritage", funded by the Interreg Atlantic Area programme. It will focus on the "Thematic study on common challenges" drawn up following the conclusions reached in the previous meeting in Florence.

The thematic study, conducted with support from the University of Florence, aimed to investigate, identify and select best practices that constitute an innovative response to identified challenges. It also included a guide for Site Managers, thereby guaranteeing the existence of a set of guidelines that should be incorporated into future Management and Sustainability Plans.

In the previous meeting, held in Florence in November 2018, AtlaS.WH presented the study prepared by Santiago de Compostela ("Diagnostic Study on World Heritage Sites in the Atlantic Area"), whose conclusions specified that the key challenges are Governance, Tourism and Population.

These challenges were also discussed in a debate organized in the city of Porto, on 30 March, 2019, on the National Historic Centres Day.

The International Meetings of World Heritage Sites in the Atlantic Area were inaugurated in Porto, on 30 January, 2018, involving the cities of Edinburgh, Bordeaux, Florence, Santiago de Compostela and Porto.

There is free entrance to the meeting held in Porto this week, subject to the room’s seating capacity. The meeting’s official language is English.
